Thanks everyone for their advice especially IMADreamer. Some answers below:
- This cemetary seems to have mostly vertical headstones so a flat one would seem out of place.
- Note that the vertical headstone sits on a granite base, and that granite base sits on a concrete foundation. So it shouldn't sink into the ground.

Responses to IMADreamer's questions:
- I don't know the type of granite, but it is from Vermont (rock of ages). Yes the imported version is from china - and that stone seems to come from the factory with all sides polished. The vermont one looks to come with only the faces polished smooth and the top/sides rough and jagged (unless you elect to have them polished for more $$). The face with the lettering has a square section in the middle that is not polished where the words go
- The seller here is a monument company (not funeral home) and an authorized dealer for the vermont granite company. I think they get the stone from them and then do the lettering/any custom design themselves in their workshop.
- What do you mean by "frosted panels around the lettering"? Do you mean the face with the lettering should be fully polished vs. an unpolished square where the letters are?
