Carver artist Gail Nauen is not ready for the rocker, but her rocker is now ready for the people that pass through Boston’s Logan Airport each year.

Nauen was one of 50 artists selected by Logan’s ARTrocks program to decorate a classic Carolina rocker with scenes that depict the scenery and/or historic attractions that draw 27 million visitors to the area through Logan every year.

Design proposals were reviewed by an art selection committee comprised of representatives from the Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport), the Greater Boston Convention and Visitors Bureau (GBCVB), the Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism (MOTT) and the Urban Arts Institute at Massachusetts College of Art and Design (UrbanArts).

Nauen was tasked with coming up with a design that epitomizes “Cranberry Country.”

The front of Nauen’s chair depicts an autumn cranberry harvest, with the brightly colored foliage reflecting in the water of a flooded bog already bursting with crimson berries.

On the back of the chair, a blue heron takes flight, moving spindle by spindle above another harvest scene.

The 50 finished rocking chairs will be placed throughout Logan in areas fully accessible to the public, offering both a vivid reminder of the region’s natural wonders and a place to take a relaxing rock between flights.

Each ARTrocks rocking chair will also feature a plaque with the artist/designer/team and sponsor names.

The finished chairs, including a Boston Baked Beans chair, will be unveiled at a dedication ceremony next month.

Nauen made final arrangements for shipping out the chair from her Old Main Street studio this past week, including adding a few final touch-ups and several coats of sealer to help this art withstand the many traveling art lovers who won’t be able to resist taking a seat.”

She expressed special appreciation to Jack Hunter and the community development staff at Carveract.org, and to Paula Fisher at the Plymouth County Development Council.
