The Extra Benefits of Heavy Weight Drill Pipes

Most commonly used in the vertical portion of a hole, Basalt provides weight on the drill bit for directional drilling while maintaining greater flexibility than a drill collar. Heavyweight is also known in the industry as hevi-wate or HWDP.
The heavy-duty drill pipe has a "center thickening", also known as a wear pad, that protects the pipe from OD wear by keeping the pipe away from the hole wall, thereby extending pipe life. It also reduces hole drag and differential sticking problems. Compared to conventional drill pipe, heavy-duty drill pipe has thicker walls, takes longer to thicken, and is stronger and has higher tensile strength. Heavy duty drill pipe is available in a variety of sizes.

Features of HWDP

Heavy Duty Drill Pipe (HWDP) can be used to transition between the drill collar and the drill pipe. The function of the HWDP is to provide a flexible transition between the drill collar and the drill pipe. This helps reduce the amount of fatigue failure seen directly above the BHA.
Heavy-duty wall pipe connection to extra-high tool connections
Available in a spiral design
Has the same outside diameter as standard drill pipe, but with a greatly reduced inside diameter
Has the same TooHJoint and swivel shoulder connection as the DP
HWDP, although stiffer than DP, can also be bent

Types of Heavy Duty Drill Pipe

Heavy-duty drill pipe (HWDP) improves the fatigue resistance of the drill column.
There are three types of heavy-duty drill pipe: Standard, Tri-Spiral™ and Spiral-Wate™. Each of these heavy-duty drill pipe designs is available in different material grades for standard or critical service conditions.

Standard HWDP

The Standard HWDP was developed to provide a gradual transition from heavy-duty drill collars to relatively lighter drill pipe.
This medium weight pipe has a wall thickness of approximately 1" and helps prevent stresses from concentrating at the top of the collar section. The heavy-duty drill pipe is also capable of drilling at higher speeds, which reduces torque and differential pressure jams.
Heavy-duty drill pipe is ideal for directional drilling applications. Because it bends easily, heavy-duty drill pipe simplifies directional control and minimizes joint fatigue problems common in large angle or horizontal drilling.
For large displacement and horizontal wells, high-strength heavy-duty drill pipe is typically used high in the hole to apply weight to the bit. This is especially true for wells with a low ratio of total vertical depth to total measured depth.

Tri-Spiral HWDP

Used for applications such as extended reach and horizontal drilling, the Tri-Spiral HWDP is ideal for wells that require additional hole cleaning and flexural resistance.
Three helixes equally spaced between tool joints are thickened to reduce severe bending stresses and hole wall contact. The header design helps increase buckling resistance, reduce differential sticking, and reduce torque and drag. Helical upsetting also helps move chips away from the low side of the hole for better hole cleaning.

Spiral-Wate HWDP

Spiral-Wate HWDP saves time and reduces drilling costs, especially in harsh drilling environments.Spiral-Wate is designed to handle maximum pressure.
Intermediate drill column assemblies are constantly subjected to some of the toughest tasks in today's drilling. The critical transition zone between the hard, heavy drill collar (under pressure) and the lighter, more flexible drill pipe (under tension) can be too much for conventional thick-walled drill pipe.
Precision tool joint alignment reduces excessive tool joint wear, resulting in longer life and less fatigue.

The Extra Benefits of Heavy Weight Drill Pipes

The heavy weight drill pipe is the transition from flexible drill pipe to rigid drill collars during drilling. It is often substituted for drill collars to reduce friction in horizontal and extended-reach Wells. Please contact LONGWAY if you need o buy the HWDP or drilling pipes.
