Recently, the "Da Cui Yun" vessel of China COSCO Shipping departed from Qinzhou Port in Beibu Gulf, carrying 120 units of BYD’s 45-ton energy storage cabinets as part of the world’s largest grid-side energy storage project. This project, located in Dammam, Saudi Arabia, will ultimately consist of 2,364 energy storage cabinets with a total capacity of 12.5 GWh, making it the largest of its kind in the world.
The 20-foot, oversized, hazardous-material containers each weigh 45.5 tons, with a combined capacity of 12.5 GWh. The project poses significant logistical challenges due to the high value, heavy weight, and tight timeline. COSCO Shipping Specialized Carriers provided full logistics support, handling both domestic land transport and international shipping for the project.
To overcome the complexities of transporting such heavy and hazardous goods, COSCO Shipping worked with the Guangxi Department of Transportation and Beibu Gulf Port Group to introduce an innovative "Integrated Transportation + New Energy" pilot program. The program involved 25 dedicated vehicles and a streamlined "factory-to-port" model, which ensured smooth coordination between factory pickup and port arrivals, meeting the project’s urgent delivery needs.
As global energy transformation accelerates, China’s exports of “new three types” products (new energy products, new technology, and new equipment) continue to rise. COSCO Shipping has now transported more than 3,000 energy storage cabinets, serving markets in the Middle East, the Americas, and beyond.
