How long can a monstera live in water?

One of the most visually appealing ways to display a monstera and many other plants is in transparent glass bottles or jars filled with water. To be able to see the roots, usually hidden by the pot or soil, is a really visually striking and novel way to display your monstera. But how long can monstera live in water? A monstera can live in water indefinitely provided that you take good care of it. For the best results, we would recommend that you take a cutting, place that cutting in water and leave it to grow. You will need to ensure it always has fresh water so we suggest changing the water every 3-5 days. You could also try using liquid fertiliser in the water to increase the chances of growth.

Will your monstera thrive or just survive in water?

If you want a truly thriving monstera then you will need to pot it correctly in soil. The nutrients that the plant will absorb from the soil simply isn’t there if you just keep it in water. However, keeping the monstera in water will keep your plant alive and well. Personally, we think that the look of a smaller plant in an unusual container can look really fantastic. We’ve seen people use all kinds of glass containers such as jam jars and old school coca-cola bottles to keep their monstera in. It gives you the chance to be really creative.

But what is a cutting and how do I make one?

A plant cutting, monstera or otherwise is just like it sounds, you cut a piece from an existing plant, in this case, a monstera. This can be a piece of the stem or root, which you then place in water and wait for it to propagate into a new plant of its own.  For more in-depth information about plant cuttings and their evolutionary advantages, you can find out more at this great wikipedia page. So, creating your own monstera cutting couldn’t be simpler. All you really need to do is snip off a piece of the stem and place the stem in water. The best thing to do is to take a stem cutting with several nodes or leaves. We would recommend using sharp scissors or secateurs to make it as easy as possible. Also, make sure that they are clean so that you don’t inadvertently contaminate the cutting. Aerial roots can be useful but it really isn’t essential to growing the new plant. Make sure you take the time to remove any leaves lower down on the stem as they would otherwise be submerged in water.  Once you’ve got the cutting in a container filled with water, place the monstera somewhere that gets plenty of light, but not direct sunlight. Once you’ve done that all you need to do is wait. The cuttings will eventually begin to grow roots. You can then pot them as you would traditionally, or as is the point of this post, keep them in water and admire the roots as well as the leaves.

How long does it take for a monstera cutting to root?

It does not take long at all for a monstera cutting to root. As long as you are taking good care of it by providing it with fresh water and plenty of light the cutting should start to develop roots within about 2 – 3 weeks. After about 3 months your monstera should have plenty of roots and should start to look generally healthy and strong. It may have even begun to sprout new leaves!

Summary

In summary, if you keep a monstera in fresh water that you change every 3-5 days, ensure it gets plenty of light without being in direct sunlight you can keep your monstera alive indefinitely. So what are you waiting for? Go and get your secetures, make the snip and watch you’re new beauty grow!
