I’ve been making some progress in our dining room that I hope to share in the next week or so. In the meantime, I wanted to share a quick, simple tip for how to attach a hanger to a plastic frame. Necessity is the mother of invention, so they say – and this trick solved a problem in our dining room.

How to Attach a Hanger to a Plastic or Metal Frame

A while back I picked up two small gold frames at a yard sale. At the time, I didn’t pay any attention to the hanging hardware on the back of the frame. As it turns out, there was not any hardware and it was actually a plastic frame. Normally, with a wood frame, I’d just hammer in some new hardware.

Initially, I tried this mounting tape, which works great for some applications. I’ve used it many times for temporary things like hanging garland or a poster for parties. However — whether due to the weight of the frame, the material of the frame or maybe even the finish on the wall — it was not working for this application. Within a few days, the frame fell off the wall… luckily the glass didn’t break!

That is when it occurred to me that I should try a product which I’ve used many times before, called E-6000. It’s a heavy-duty glue that works on many different materials. (such as ceramics, metal, and clay)

Supplies Needed:

  • Plastic or Metal Picture Frame
  • Sawtooth Hangers from a Picture Hanging Kit
  • E-6000 Glue

Instructions:

1. Apply Glue

First, apply the glue to a sawtooth hanger from the picture hanging kit. Then, press the hardware onto the frame.

2. Let the Glue Dry

Once in place, allow the glue plenty of time to dry. I let these plastic frames dry 24 hours before hanging.

Two steps. That’s it! Talk about a painless project!

I’m pleased with this easy solution and am glad to have it for other items we may want to display on our walls. For example, a souvenir or memento that isn’t “made for hanging” such as a metal bin shadow box.
