Can someone school me on cleaning wheat? Looking at cleaners they are just a rotating screen. Looks like some have tin work under them to catch and funnel grain into an auger. Trash comes out lower end. How do you change screens for different crops? We would use it for wheat and oats. Probably only a couple hundred bushel a year max. I've seen a few on Craigslist but really would like to understand how they work or which brand to look for. John Smith

Are you wanting to plant it or clean it for storage or clean it for sale?
Rotary cleaners will take out some trash.
They are ok for scalping.
You need a clipper to do a deep cleaning and then a gravity table to finish.

All you need for cleaning decent quality wheat is a seed cleaner, Clipper or Crippen both are good.  Should be able to find a decent small used one.  Gravity is only needed if the wheat is poorer quality, like scabby kernels, etc, that a cleaner can't get out although you can turn the air up on the cleaner and get quite a bit of the light kernels out without a gravity.  I've never heard of anyone using a color sorter on wheat but I suppose it has happened.

If cleaning to run through a drill they will not do a good enough job. Get a clipper or for only a couple hundred bushels find someone in the area that still does grain cleaning. John Smith

I like to use both in the cleaning process. Run it through a rotary cleaner and then a Clipper. The rotary will sort out most of the large trash and very small seed, allowing it to run through the Clipper a little faster. If only one was an option, I’d be looking for a Clipper type cleaner with a good variety of screens.

Don't know what these cost but there are new metal versions of the old venerable Clipper M2B design.

Metal construction,v- belt pulleys, screen cleaning brushes, sacking auger etc.

I think they also rebuild old units and have new and some used stuff for sale.

Could try running the wheat through a stationary combine, turning up the fan a bit. Clipper 27 here works like a champ, feed it with a pro box on a forklift. farmerkj

We have an old fanning mill in the barn. Took a look at it today. Covered in bat poo. No motor on it but it does have a crank. It was used last in the early 80's dad thought. I forgot grandpa had it. He's been gone nearly 20 years. I thought a rotary cleaner would be faster and easier. After reading the replies I think I'll dig it out and tinker with it. Can't recall the name on it but it's green and was made in Minneapolis. Even has a bag filling elevator on it. I'll post a pic if I get it figured out. farmerkj

Managed to clean a hundred bushel over the weekend. Spent most of Saturday trying to modernize stuff to make it worth while. Still had some hulls on unthrashed kernels but got the straw and big stuff out. 5 gallon pail every 20-25 seconds. Ended up using hydraulic power.

Hi, catching up on an old unanswered post. The Magik gravity cleaner has stood the test of time in cleaning various grains for farm and commercial operations. It is a non-mechanical system that allows for removal/replacement of screens for different grain cleaning. Sizes vary from 700 BPH up to 60,000 BPH. See www.magikkleenersales.com for more info. We look forward to hearing from you and say Dan sent you! qmark

if you can find a Harvey Gjestal clener it would do the job. He was a farmer in Saskatchewan that assenbled 2 or three machines into one for a small scale farmer. I suspect it was an indent coupled with a air screen and maybe a scalper with it.

Don't think there were flat screens on the original. I think everything was rotary. Could be wrong though. It appears you can still purchase them from Flaman.
