Induction Heating Three Steel Parts for Bending

18 Aug.,2023

A company contacted THE LAB at Ambrell because they needed to heat three steel parts for a bending application and wanted to switch to induction from torch heating. THE LAB determined that an Ambrell EKOHEAT® 10 kW, 50-150 kHz induction heating system with a single position multiple-turn helical induction heating coil would be the right solution for the application. The frequency for the application was 100 kHz and the target temperature was 1400 ºF (760 ºC).

Initial tests were conducted to optimize the power delivered to the part. Temperature indicating paint was then applied, which dissolves when the part reaches target temperature. All three parts achieved the target temperature within two minutes. They reached as high as 1,800°F (982 ºC) within four minutes.

Using induction heating for this bending application was beneficial for a number of reasons. Induction is a high efficiency heating method, especially when compared to the client's prior torch heating method. It is also a rapid, controllable and repeatable heating process that delivers an even distribution of heat. Induction is a hands-free method of heating that isn't dependent on operator skill like a torch. Finally, the expertise of THE LAB with free induction heating application testing was important, as they were able to develop the right process for their requirements.
