Which Type of Pharmaceutical Packaging Do You Need?

21 Jun.,2023

Pharmaceutical packaging plays a critical role in the medical supply chain. It protects pharmaceutical products from physical damage and chemical alterations throughout the shipping and distribution process, keeping them safe and effective for consumer use. There are several different types of pharmaceutical packaging, each with its own purpose.

Primary Pharmaceutical Packaging

Primary packaging is the first line of defense between a pharmaceutical product and the environment; it comes in direct contact with the product in question, preserving the drug’s chemical composition.

  • Blister Packaging:

    Blister packaging

is thermoformed or cold formed plastic with separate cavities for individual pills and plastic or aluminum backing. Blister packs are used for solids rather than liquids, and are excellent for compliance packaging.

  • Bottling: Bottles can be used for both liquid and solid pharmaceutical products and can be designed for specifications like child resistance.

Secondary Pharmaceutical Packaging

Secondary packaging does not come in direct contact with pharmaceutical products. It is mainly used to protect primary packaging and promote brand awareness.

  • Cartoning: Carton packaging helps add an extra layer of

protection for pharmaceutical products during the shipping process and provides an excellent template for graphic design as well as adequate space for product information and instructions.

  • Parenteral Packaging: Parenteral products that use primary packaging options like vials or pre-filled syringes typically require very delicate handling. Parenteral packaging includes a variety of secondary packaging methods used to keep parenteral pharmaceutical products safe throughout the supply chain.
