Within the construction industry, diamond drilling is a very popular drilling method that is accurate, neat and precise. There are very few materials that these drills cannot drill through, however it is still important to understand what you can and cannot use diamond drilling for.
Diamond drill bits are most commonly used on materials that fall within these four categories:
Glass & Fused Glass – With the right speed, drill pressure and lubrication, glass can be drilled into without any problems – breakages are rare if you use a good quality diamond bit.
Concrete – Ideal for cutting through reinforced and non-reinforced concrete, diamond drilling puts stress on the concrete and creates cracks which enables the concrete to be broken away.
Bedrock – Similar to concrete but often more demanding due to increased hardness, diamond drilling can be used to drill directly into bedrock (e.g. granite) if you are installing foundations, pipework etc.
Diamond drilling is ideal for creating circular precision holes that can run as deep as you need them to.
For inserting holes into materials such as plates, fused glass or any other dense object, you should use a small diamond core drill, available in sizes as small as 1mm.
Diamond drilling should not be used on any metal or soft materials like soft wood. The softness will cause the diamonds on the drill to clog up and, effectively, stop working.
It should also never be used on tempered or toughened glass, as it will simply crack straight away.
Diamond is the hardest material to exist which makes it ideal for cutting into other hard and tough materials. However, please bear in mind that when drilling into extremely hard materials, such as sapphire, you may need more drill bits – and a lot more patience!
Top Tip – It’s important to remember that the diamond drill bit should never feel warm to touch. It should also never have burn marks around the tip of the drill end. If it does, these are all strong indications that the drill speed may have been too fast, or the pressure too strong. You should also ensure you use the right amount of lubrication.
